What Is Bed Buddy?
Bed Buddy makes reusable microwavable heat packs that also work cold from the freezer. Learn what they are, how they work and what to know first.
Quick answer
Bed Buddy is a line of reusable hot and cold wraps for neck, shoulders, back, joints and more. You warm a wrap in the microwave for soothing moist heat, or chill it in the freezer for a flexible cold compress. Bed Buddy is marketed through Carex Health Brands.
Applies to: the microwavable and freezable wraps in our line. Pillows and weighted blankets that share the Bed Buddy name are not heat packs, so do not microwave them.
How a Bed Buddy works
Most of our wraps are fabric pouches filled with natural grains. Depending on the model, the filling may also include herbs, flowers or fragrance. The grains hold heat well, so a short stay in the microwave gives you warmth that lasts for a while. The same filling stays pliable when cold, so the wrap still bends around your neck or shoulder after time in the freezer.
There is no cord and no battery. Once the wrap is heated you can use it anywhere you can sit comfortably, as long as you stay with it.

Our guide on which Bed Buddy is right for you walks through the choice.
What to know before the first use
- Heating times are different for every model. There is no single number that works for the whole range. Read the tag on your own wrap.
- Warm, not hot. Check the wrap before it touches your skin.
- Stay nearby while it heats and while you use it.
- Filling varies. We do not use one filling in every wrap, so do not assume a particular grain.
Important: A Bed Buddy is a comfort product. It is not a replacement for medical care. If pain is severe, new, or does not improve, talk to your doctor.
Hot or cold?
Many people reach for warmth on stiff, tight muscles and for cold on a sore spot that feels irritated. Either is simple with the same wrap. Our guides cover both: how long to heat a Bed Buddy in the microwave and how to use a Bed Buddy cold.
